RESEARCH METHODOLOGY-KANNUR UNIVERSITY

II Semester M.B.A Degree (Regular) Examination, July 2015
                                      (2014 Admn)
      MBA 2C14 : RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

                                    SECTION-A

Answer two questions in this Section. Each question carries 13 marks.

1.  a) Describe in detail the process of  research.

                             OR
     b) An educator has opinion that the grades high school students make depend
on the amount of time they spent listening to music. To test this theory, he
has randomly given 400 students questionnaire. Within the questionnaire are
the two questions : "How many hours per week do you listen to music" ?
"What is the average grade for all your classes" ? The data from the survey
are in the following table. Using 5 percent significance level, test whether
grades and time spent listening to music are independent or dependent.

Hours Spent                                                   Average Grade
Listening
to Music                                          A    B     C     D     E        Total

5-10 hrs.                                          20   27    27    19    2          95

11-20 hrs                                         9      27    71     16   32       155

2.  a)  Write the steps involved in report writing and elaborate  on its importance in
         effective report writing.
                                   OR
    b)  As the head of a department of a consumer research organisation, you have
the responsibility for testing and comparing the lifetime of four brands of
electric bulbs. Suppose you test the lifetime of three electric bulbs of each of
the four brands. The data is shown below, each entry representing the lifetime
of an electric bulb, measured in hundreds of hours.
                                             Brand

A                     B                      C                     D

20                  25                      24                   23

19                  23                      20                   20

21                  21                      22                   20

Can we infer that the mean lifetime of the four brands of electric bulbs are
equal ?
                                    SECTION-B

Answer any six questions in this Sections. Each question carries 9 marks. 1 mark
for Part a), 3 marks for Part b), and 5 marks for Part c).

3. a) What is Type I error ?
    b) Distinguish between null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis.
    c) The heights of six randomly chosen sailors are, in inches,63,65,58,69,71
and 72. The heights of 10 randomly chosen soldiers are,in inches, 61,62,65,
66,69,69,70,71,72 and 73. Do these figures indicate that soldiers are on an
average shorter than sailors ? Test at 5% level of significance.
4.  a) What is Ex post facto research ?
     b) What is meant by literature review ?
     c) Explain the role of computers in application for data analysis.
5.  a) What is research problem ?
     b) What is meant by exploratory research ?
     c) Is single research design suitable in all research studies ? Explain.
6.  a) What is meant by pilot survey ?
     b) What are syndicated data sources ?
     c) What are  the guiding considerations in the construction of questionnaire ?
7.  a)  What do you mean by multivariate analysis ?
     b) Explain the meaning of 'Standard error' in sampling analysis.
     c) Distinguish between an experiment and survey.
8.  a) What is ANOCOVA ?
     b) What is the significance of using multiple discriminant analysis ?
     c) An examination was given to two classes consisting of 40 and 50 students
respectively. In the first class the mean marks were 76, with standard
deviation of 8. While the second class the mean marks were 80, with a
standard deviation of 7. Is there a significant difference between the
performance of the two classes at a level of significance of 0.05.
9.  a) What is scaling ?
     b) What do you mean by 'Sample Design' ?
     c) Explain the significance of research report.
